What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a highly purified protein that has a better safety record than the common aspirin. Since the FDA approved BOTOX® in 2002, over 11 million women have been treated making it the number one cosmetic product in the US today.
BOTOX® has been used for medical purposes for over 20 years, and was originally used to treat muscle spasms. In fact, BOTOX® Cosmetic was first injected in the face to stop eye twitches. It was then that it was discovered that the relaxation of the forehead muscles that caused eye twitching had an unintended consequence. It smoothed the appearance of the forehead.
When opthamologists found that using BOTOX® in the forehead to prevent eye twitching actually smoothed away wrinkles, the modern version of BOTOX® Cosmetic was born.
Today, BOTOX® Cosmetic is used both as correct and preventative measures. Relaxing the muscles causes the wrinkles you have now to decrease/soften. Relaxing the muscles now also prevents wrinkles from increasing because you won't be using that muscle as often.

Frequently Asked Questions About Botox Cosmetic
Will BOTOX® paralyze my face?
BOTOX® is actually a muscle relaxant, so it does not paralyze facial muscles, it relaxes them. BOTOX® injections work by blocking the connection between nerve endings in the muscles so as to relax the facial muscle and smooth the skin.
Is BOTOX® just like Botulism?
There are 7 different types of Clostridium Botulinum bacteria used to make BOTOX®. The highly purified protein Botulinum Toxin Type A, which is what BOTOX® is made out of, is a protein complex produced by Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. So, BOTOX® itself is the protein derived from the botulism rather than the bacteria itself. To indicate just how safe BOTOX® injections are, more clients have had complications with Aspirin than they’ve had with BOTOX® injections.
Are BOTOX® injections painful?
The needles used for BOTOX® injections are only minimally larger than acupuncture needles, and most clients do not require any form of pain relief during BOTOX® injections. Although there may be mild discomfort with BOTOX® injections, there are ways to minimize any pain including ice packs.
Doesn’t BOTOX® make eyelids droop?
While it is true that "ptosis" or drooping eyelids is a potential side effect of BOTOX® injections, this effect only occurs when the injections are done incorrectly, and can easily be avoided by choosing an experienced BOTOX® injection professional at Ambrosia.
Is it dangerous?
No. It is a purified form of the protein and is injected in very small amounts so there is virtually no risk. In fact, BOTOX has treated millions of people since its 2002 FDA approval.
How does it work?
It is injected into a muscle to temporarily paralyze the muscle to prevent movement and assist wrinkle reduction. It is the repeated movement of muscles that causes wrinkles so by preventing movement it helps reduce or soften wrinkles.
Is there any pre-treatment?
If possible try not take any medications with aspirin, ibuprofen, NSAID, Fish oils and/or Vitamin E in them for 3 to 5 days prior to treatment. This will help decrease the bruising at the injection site.
